This is the true story of love and survival, of a great dad raising, protecting, and mentoring an impossible kid. It takes place on a family farm outside Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, during one of America’s most innocent eras, 1949 to 1956. Georgie tells first-person stories of farm, school, church, and family life from his age five to age twelve. All of it is touching; most of it is hilarious and unique. Very few people have experienced the misadventures Georgie experienced daily. An example is “The chicken wagon,” a quest for reliable and available draft animals to pull his wagon. The stories often take place in a one-room schoolhouse and feature the characters who shaped Georgie’s life, including the Reed Brothers who came to school after being skunk-sprayed, and the small church where the preacher showed up to dinner, unexpected but always fed.
